With Bingo on pause, Hope Grows Lottery announced
$10,000 prize! — closes June 21

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to prompt organizations to rethink how they do things, and Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is no exception.
“We used to operate a bingo; we had a team of volunteers who did weekly bingo or monthly bingo for Cornerstone at the local bingo hall,” says Carly Cunningham, Cornerstone’s Manager of Communications and Donor Relations. “And then COVID hit. Bingo went on pause, and as we considered what that would look like, as the pandemic continued, it just made sense to sunset the bingo program and come up with something new.”
Because Cornerstone already had a lottery license, it was easy to transition to a charitable lottery. In this way, Cornerstone’s new Hope Grows Lottery was born: the chance to win a $10,000 prize while supporting Cornerstone’s programs and services.
“It’s socially distant, physically distant, and who isn’t hurting right now?” says Cunningham. “It’s been a very hard time for a lot of the community. This is just a really interesting way for people to participate and support Cornerstone, but also have an opportunity to receive $10,000 cash at a time when people might really need it.”
“By participating in the Hope Grows Lottery, the community is helping to raise funds for the programs and services women and children impacted by violence so desperately need,” adds Cunningham.
Proceeds from the lottery will go to fund program costs and client-related needs. These include: covering food costs for clients, including those living in the shelter; having fully-equipped, warm, and welcoming programming spaces to help clients feel safe; and maintaining the building to ensure accessibility and security.
Nancy Johnston, Executive Director of Cornerstone, says, “If the pandemic has taught us anything it is that violence thrives in isolation, and staying connected is vital. We see Cornerstone’s Hope Grows Lottery as a chance for a fresh start.”
Johnston continues, “The Hope Grows Lottery will be an exciting initiative for the community, providing an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, and bring some joy to many during an incredibly challenging time. There may only be one lucky ticket drawn, but there will be many winners as a result of this initiative.”
Cunningham also talks about how the local business community has rallied to help make the lottery a reality: HTM Insurance, National Shunt Service Ltd, PACE Network, Dalren General Contractor, Lynn Hardy at RBC Wealth Management, Spoolon Manufacturing Ltd, the Karen Chalovich Investment Group at BMO Nesbitt Burns, and 93.3 MyFM.
“These businesses were approached with this idea, and they saw value in it, and thought as an investment opportunity for themselves, and to help advance the agency and sponsored this prize,” Cunningham says. “Without these community supporters and these local businesses, we would not be able to have an initiative like this and have this opportunity to raise money.”
Tickets are $50 each, or three for $125 — only 750 tickets
Tickets will be on sale until June 21 and can be purchased online through Cornerstone’s website (link), by phone at 905-372-1545, or directly at the front desk at 40 Swayne Street in Cobourg. The lottery draw will be on June 28.
“There are only three weeks remaining to purchase tickets,” Cunningham says. “And one lucky winner will be walking away with $10,000 cash!”
