Local patrons of The Big Apple have asked for take-out service, so the landmark tourist attraction/restaurant in Colborne has responded with a new lunch menu.

The Big Apple will debut a lunchtime takeout service of fish and chips and the Big Apple’s delicious BeaverTails pastry, as well as cold wraps and sandwiches from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. And, if there is enough demand, general manager Sylvia Nagy says it could open for more hours during the Ontario COVID-19 lockdown.

“Yes, it’s only at lunchtime from 11- 3, so we’re trying it out. Quite a few customers were looking for lunch and for BeaverTails. We will see how it goes and if it goes well, we might extend it and do it on a wider scale,” said Nagy.

“All last year, we had no tourists at all, so we really appreciate the local traffic. It’s been pretty good considering all the restrictions the government has put on us.”

Nagy said everything will be fresh and made to order at the restaurant. Wait times are expected to be around 10 minutes and customers can call ahead or pay for it at the cash. There is a waiting area inside, or the order can be brought out to a customer’s car. Online ordering for baked good and market products is always available for pickup.

The fish and chips will be either haddock or halibut fish in one-piece or two-piece orders, including coleslaw. A full BeaverTails menu is also available.

Nagy said the take-out service is in addition to the mini-bakery set up in the lobby of The Big Apple, with variety of baked goods available. COVID social distancing restrictions allow only one group at a time to enter to pick up baked items. Masks and hand hygiene are also mandatory.

“We encourage everyone to call ahead or order online,” said Nagy.

The restaurant, said Nagy, has been closed since the provincial lockdown was invoked on Dec. 26. But, the takeout is allowing at least some of the restaurant staff to return to their jobs.

Nagy said The Big Apple is planning a big summer of family-friendly outdoor activities in 2021 that it hopes will bring back people to the longtime tourist attraction located just off Hwy. 401 at exit 497.

“This summer, we have quite a few things coming, activities for the kids, including a brand new carousel ride for family enjoyment,” she said.

The Big Apple is currently open on Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 5 p.m.

The Big Apple is at 262 Orchard Rd., Colborne. For more information, call 905-355-2574 or log on to www.thebigapple.ca to download the app.
