Opportunity to buy beautiful quilts to help fund the great work of the quilters

Article by Valerie MacDonald

Salem Valley Quilters have been working hard since 2008 to create quilts for community members recovering from surgery and serious illnesses as well as for children and hospital patients.

A fundraiser, a sale of quilts, is underway so they can continue this work, organizer Linda Mitchell told the News Now Network recently.

They are all sizes, colours and themes – and quite beautiful – as I can attest.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic interfering with the quilters usual method of working in as a group at a downtown United Church in Colborne, meetings have been replaced by members working on various stages of quilt-making in their own homes; from designing the tops to adding the stuffing, quilting the layers together and then applying the bindings.

“Some members don’t sew at all,” Mitchell said on the porch of her home where people can pick up and pay for quilts after they contact the quilting club on the Salem Valley Quilters Facebook Page. Buyers can choose the one they wish to buy, see the dimensions and price, then message Salem Valley Quilters to make pick up and payment arrangements.

E-transfer is one of the options.

The money helps the club purchase the materials to create these hand-made quilts that go to “people in the community” with life-threatening illnesses or recovering from surgeries as well as the Children’s Aid Society in Cobourg, Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre, Transition House Emergency Shelter, the psychiatric ward at the North Bay Hospital, plus the long term care facility, Warkworth Place, in Warkworth she explained.

The club’s current project is to make quilts for chemotherapy patients in Lakeridge Hospital in Oshawa, Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg and the chemotherapy unit in the Belleville hospital, Mitchell said.
