Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence, “excited and honoured”

Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence was appointed Tuesday to oversee the National Revenue portfolio in the Federal Conservative Shadow Cabinet.

“I’m personally very excited and honoured” to be chosen by Party Leader Erin O’Toole, “the future prime minister,” he told the News Now Network in an interview.

“I’m just now” talking with the former portfolio holder, going over the file,” he said when contacted by telephone on Wednesday.

As a former practising lawyer who specialized in corporate and tax law, and worked in the financial sector, Lawrence said he has been involved in matters where the Revenue Canada Agency (CRA) had been “misguided” and “pushed too hard” on Canadians.

“We just want to make sure all Canadians, especially residents in Northumberland-Peterborough South, are getting fair and reasonable treatment from the CRA,” he said.

When the CRA does go too far “it’s our job to hold them to account.”

This is the first time in two decades that a Northumberland MP has been part of a federal cabinet, Lawrence said.
