“It’s been nice to get out in the outdoors and play some baseball”

Labour Day Weekend would normally be the time for Northumberland Jacks rep teams to be heading to their respective Baseball Ontario championships.

This hasn’t been a normal year, though, for the Northumberland Baseball Association as regular seasons were wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, the association is looking ahead to the 2021 season and recently have been able to hold some tryouts.

“Parents and players have kept their distance and stayed safe and we’ve had some really positive feedback from the kids,” said Northumberland Baseball president Gord Kelly. “It’s been nice to get out in the outdoors and play some baseball.”

One team, the 15U Jacks, has been holding tryouts and is now preparing to play some games this month with two other teams in the Elite Baseball League of Ontario (ELBO).

Kelly said more tryouts will be announced soon, including for the 10U Jacks team.

Northumberland Baseball is hoping players will return but always welcomes new players and coaches as well.

In fact, the association is hoping to field teams in the 8U (2013 birth year) and 9U (2012 birth year) divisions of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association (EOBA) next season. Contact Bryan at blandry@northumberlandbaseball.ca if interested.

“We’re always looking for new blood to get involved,” Kelly said. “Losing a summer season, for the most part, has been hard and we just hope to have some consistent numbers in 2021 and be able to field teams at all age groups.”

To find out more about coaching or playing, Kelly said communications director and registrar Tara Rice can be reached at trice@northumberlandbaseball.ca, noting there are courses required to coach baseball in Ontario.

Kelly said he can also be reached at gkelly@northumberlandbaseball.ca for any other questions.
